Is It Time for New Sneakers?

Here’s the deal: working out in old or worn-out sneakers isn’t just uncomfortable it can also cause injuries! Over time, your shoes start to lose absorption, cushioning, and stability. Working out (especially running) in older shoes can increase the stress and impact on your legs and joints. So, when is it time to trade in the old sneaks for a new pair? Here a few telltale signs…

Aches & Pains

Are your knees, hips, and feet starting to feel sore after exercising in your sneakers? More than likely it is a red flag that it’s time for a new pair.

This is happening because the cushioning and support built into the shoe has worn down and is no longer effective. It is hard to tell just with just a visual inspection, so trust your body. It will tell you that it’s time for new sneakers.

High Mileage

This one especially applies to runners. One of the most important reasons you want to keep track of your mileage is to monitor the life of your running shoes.

As a rule of thumb, running shoes have a life span of 300 to 500 miles. When we run we land with nearly four times our body weight. In just 10 minutes of running, you’ll strike the ground around 1,500 times. Your sneakers take a major beating!

Blisters

Blisters happen, especially for runners and anyone who wears sneakers all the time. Blisters are especially common in excessively humid conditions (ahem…Tampa) and if you are not wearing the right socks.

If you have tried moisture-wicking socks and are still getting blisters, it’s a sign that your shoes do not fit correctly. They may be past their prime.

Discomfort

When it comes to comfortable sneakers, the idea is to have everything from the toe box to the arch to the heel feel like it is a functioning part of your foot. If your shoes feel as if they are working against the natural motion of your feet or they are causing pain, they are not the right sneakers for you.

When shopping for new sneakers, it is a good idea to jog around the store to make sure they are a comfy option. With today’s comfort technology, you should immediately feel comfortable in your shoes, no break-in required.

How to Know When to Replace Your Shoes

Think Back: When Did You Buy Them?

Even if you don’t notice these signs, the general rule of thumb is about 45-60 hours before your midsole is worn out. If you’ve been wearing them for more than 6 months, it’s likely time for a new pair.

Of course, with workout shoes, like many things (ahem-like personal training) you get what you pay for. Shoes made with higher-quality materials tend to last longer. But when it comes to compression capabilities, or their ability to absorb the shock of plyometric, jumping movements, regardless of brand your shoes will fail over time.

Take a Look

So, how to tell if your workout shoes are ready for the trash? The best way is to look.

Trainer Tip: don’t just look at the treads of the shoe. Check midsole, from the side of the shoe. If it shows excessive creasing or wear – then it’s probably time to toss them. Your the heel and ball of the foot will thank you.

To tell if it’s time to replace your exercise shoes, you can perform a press test. All you do is press on the outsole (the bottom) of the shoe. If it gives very little, that means that the material is highly compressed and you need a new pair.

Again, old sneakers not only cause pain and discomfort but also sports injury. Be smart, trust what your body is saying, and get the new sneakers already!

Tabata vs. HIIT: What’s the Difference?

One of the questions we get asked all the time is about Tabata vs. HIIT, “What is the difference and which one is the better workout?” The simple answer is that both workouts are excellent for your body! In fact, Tabata is a form of HIIT. HIIT stands for high-intensity interval training, and people are loving it because it’s fast, effective, and fun. Tabata is a form of HIIT that involves 4-minute rounds during your session. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at both Tabata and HIIT workouts.

HIIT Workouts

Want to stay in shape, but you’re still rockin’ that excuse that you’re ’too busy’ to exercise? HIIT is great because it provides an excellent workout in a short period. HIIT workouts are known for their intensity!

At one of our South Tampa HIIT classes, you’ll experience short bursts of powerful movement, followed by regular short rest periods. The goal is to push yourself to your limit for a short period, rather than spending long increments of time doing cardio such as jogging or cycling. Known for its ability to burn fat, HIIT is making waves in the fitness world.

After a great workout, your trainer or massage therapist at Driven Fit+ SWS can help your recovery with a hand-held massager (perfect for those rests between exercises) or a therapeutic massage at our wellness studio.

Tabata Style Workouts

Tabata is a style of HIIT. It was developed in 1996 by Japanese professor, Dr. Izumi Tabata. It was originally created as a way to train Olympic speed skaters, but today it’s becoming an extremely popular form of exercise in gyms across the world.

Did you know? Tabata was developed to train Olympic athletes in 1996.

Tabata focuses on the same movement for four minutes where HIIT routines include a variety of exercises and time increments.

With Tabata, it goes like this:

  • Workout (HARD.) for 20 seconds.
  • Rest for 10 seconds.
  • Repeat these intervals 8 times

This gets you four minutes of high impact training. At just 10 seconds, Tabata’s rest period is shorter than most HIIT workouts. You will burn out those muscle groups and also be working on mental muscles too.

Let’s HIIT It

There are many variations of HIIT, Tabata being one of them. They have their differences, but both are excellent forms of exercise that offer weight loss and toning results. Both do a great job of getting your heart rate up, burning fat, and zapping calories.

Up for a challenge? Try one of our Full Body Blast group personal training classes at Driven Fit + Sponaugle Wellness Studio in South Tampa! Each class is different but always involves some form of HIIT training. We promise a high-intensity fun, and challenging full-body workout each and every time! Virtual Reality isn’t the Future of exercise…yet..but until then…..

Working out at Driven Fit + SWS Tampa TrainingVirtual Reality isn’t the future of exercise…yet…but until then, there’s the Keiser Functional Trainer.

When we found our new space, renovated it, and then had the opportunity to fill it with equipment, we knew it had to include one of these.

While cable machines with movable arms are a gym staple, this one is different in one key way: it has no stacked weights.

Instead of cables attached to variable-weight plates, resisted by gravity, the cable is attached to a tower where resistance is moderated using pneumatic air pressure.

This is a noteworthy improvement over traditional weights governed by gravity because the movement is very smooth, resistance is constant, and the shock load on joints and connective tissue is significantly lower.

From the user’s perspective…it just feels better. It’s smoother, less “bouncy,” and can be instantly made harder or easier with plus/minus buttons to control the air pressure. OH! And it counts reps too!! That is a handy feature which frankly we wonder why hasn’t come sooner.

The Keiser Functional Trainer is the evolution of a piece of equipment trainers and clients use everyday, and we love its modern, thoughtful features.

Try it out at our studio next time you’re in (if you haven’t already), and watch this space for more posts about unique equipment and innovations at Driven + SWS.  For more Info fill out this form below

Improving bottom line with Corporate Wellness

Employee wellness benefits will boost morale and improve bottom line.  By selecting the right corporate wellness program owners,  managers, and teams will benefit not only physically but mentally.Corporate wellness chair massage

Finding the right program may be challenging especially since there isn’t a one size fits all. Whether you’re a startup or an established business, the company culture must be evaluated.  From advanced technology options like fitbit constantly tracking, and reminding individuals of daily activity accomplishments to just being able to have a break and a breath of fresh air for 20 minutes to meditate will work wonders for two separate personality types.

The simplest style can prove to be just as effective if followed from top to bottom level positions.  Setting the standards for everyone to see will inspire change across all departments especially with the right education and resources.

As a corporate wellness provider in Tampa Florida, Team Driven encourages businesses to build an environment of camaraderie.  Here are 3 simple ways companies can make a workplace excited about their wellness program vs forcing mandatory activities.

1. Designated Time for mind activities that aren’t work related.  Ping pong, darts, cards, board games, LEGO building.

2. 1-2 hours and have scheduled time frames for rotating team members to shut down to allow mind, and body rejuvenation.  examples;

  • Nap Pods
  • Massage Therapy (chair massage)
  • Restorative stretching & exercise classes for mobility

3. Wellness adventures off site: surfing lessons , bike exploration  , outdoor fit camps by sport theme or buddy pairing challenges.  example; Take a small group of employees from different departments offsite to do something fun away from their desks is a great way to boost morale.
