Natural Remedies for Sciatica

The sciatic nerve is a big nerve that runs from the lower back down through each leg. The term used to describe pain stemming from this nerve is Sciatica, either due to inflammation, compression, or overall irritation. You may even feel tingling, numbness, and weakness in the affected leg(s). Sadly for many people, sciatica pain can be unbearable!

Usually, those suffering with sciatica pain will gain some relief in stretching, and exercise. However, many will turn to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) to relieve their sciatica pain. At DrivenFit+SWS, we prefer the non-steroidal approach and would like to offer you some natural options without the dangerous side effects of NSAIDs.

4 Herbs for Sciatica

Turmeric

Turmeric’s active ingredient, curcumin, binds anti-inflammatory properties of help to relieve sciatica pain and swelling by reducing levels of certain inflammation-stimulating enzymes.

Here’s how you can incorporate turmeric into your diet:

  • Brew it into a tea.
  • Add a small amount to a green smoothie.
  • Add ground turmeric to your food. Heat it in milk with coconut oil and a sprinkle of black pepper.

DrivenFit Tip: apply it topically in a paste; it can help from the outside in.

Garlic

Garlic is like turmeric; in that it has anti-inflammatory properties. This herb aids in fighting pain and bonus, it’s an immune system-booster. Add it into all your meals or (definitely not for the faint of heart) take four raw cloves each morning with a glass of water.

DrivenFit Tip: Like turmeric, garlic goes great in a green smoothie!

Jamaican Dogwood

Derived from the bark of the dogwood tree, Jamaican dogwood is a strong element used to relieve nerve pain. It can be applied as a salve or taken as a capsule. Note: if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, you should avoid using Jamaican dogwood.

DrivenFit Tip: Consult your doctor before using it because it’s slightly toxic.

St. John’s Wort

Dating back to the Ancient Greeks, St. John’s Wort has a variety of benefits. With its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, astringent, and antioxidant properties, St. John’s Wort is a highly effective herb for sciatica pain. It even helps regenerate nerve tissue damaged by sciatica.

DrivenFit Tip: You can also use this herb to help with depression.

Arnica

Arnica, a homeopathic remedy for all sorts of aches and injuries is another natural choice you can try for sciatica. It is offered in both the traditional homeopathic oral solution or in creams and rubs.

Managing Sciatica Pain Naturally

You can effectively manage your sciatica pain naturally. You can potentially relieve much of your pain by combining regular physical activity (like walking, swimming, and even yoga) and stretching along with herbal remedies.

Acupuncture FAQs

Acupuncture originated in China more than 2,000 years ago and is currently one of the most commonly used medical procedures in the world. In fact, a survey from the National Health Interview showed an estimated 14 million adults in the United States incorporate acupuncture into their healthcare routine! Curious? Here we answer some of the most frequently asked questions we get asked by our clients…

Who can benefit from acupuncture?

Acupuncture treats a wide variety of ailments and conditions including allergies, pain management, surgical prevention/ recovery, disease prevention and health maintenance, fertility issues or other gynecological disorders.

How does acupuncture work?

Traditional Chinese medicine believes that imbalances in the basic energy flow of life (known as qi) are the main cause of illness and other ailments. Qi is believed to flow through pathways (or meridians) in your body and are accessible through approximately 400 different acupuncture points. When needles are inserted into these points, it is believed that energy flow will rebalance and allow for your body’s natural healing mechanisms to take over.

In contrast, Western medicine has its own theories about acupuncture and believes that it incorporates modern concepts of neuroscience. According to the National Institutes of Health, researchers believe acupuncture works based on the following explanations:

  • Opioid Release: During acupuncture, your body releases endorphins (part of your body’s natural pain-control system) into your brain and spinal cord, creating a similar effect to taking pain medication.
  • Spinal Cord Stimulation: Also known as the “gate theory”, it is believed that acupuncture stimulates the nerves in your spinal cord to release pain-suppressing neurotransmitters.
  • Blood Flow Changes: Acupuncture needles are known to increase the amount of blood flow throughout the body, supplying additional nutrients and removing toxic substances – both of which promote healing.

How many sessions do I need?

While the number of sessions is dependent upon your specific condition or needs, acupuncture therapy typically involves a series of weekly or biweekly treatments. Each session usually lasts for 30 to 60 minutes.

What can I expect from my visit?

Your initial visit with our resident acupuncturist, Dr. Sponaugle, will include an overall assessment of your condition, lifestyle, behavior, current medications, or other questions pertaining to your general health and well-being. She will use this information to create a treatment plan that bests suits your needs.

During the actual procedure, Dr. Sponaugle will insert individually wrapped, sterilized, stainless steel needles into the targeted acupuncture points. Needle insertions are generally painless; however, you may experience a sharp sensation when the needle reaches its target. After placement, needles may be gently moved or stimulated with electricity or heat.
