4.5 Ways to Trick Yourself into a more Intense Workout

Fitness is certainly a mental game! If you believe it, trust us, you can achieve it. Sometimes we can all use a little trick to make us push harder. Fall into fitness with a more intense workout session with these 4 ½ tips (yes, you read that right) from our personal trainers!

Find a Distraction

Sometimes, it’s hard not to continuously count the clock during your workout. Dragging it minute by minute, which means it’s a time to find a way to distract yourself! Music is a great way to motivate you to a more intense workout session. Amp it up with upbeat songs that you’ll want to move to!

Want something other than the usual tunes? Studies showed multitasking during exercise could be beneficial both mentally and physically. Try repeating lists, playing mental games like tic-tac-toe, recite multiplication tables to distract yourself into a better workout. Permission to go ahead and brainstorm that project for a client while on the rowing machine –it may be a way to push you!

Repeat a Mantra

Mind over matter! Your brain drives everything and is constantly seconds ahead telling the body what to do and what not to do.

Your brain may pull you back from what your body can do and take on more. Teach your brain to get the body to go harder with a mantra. Repeating it can push you to a more intense workout. Plus, it could distract you from the clock a bit.

Pro Tip: slowly push yourself past your perceived max. Right when you feel like you’re losing gas, start repeating your mantra to push you through.

Your mantra should inspire you to keep moving when you feel like you want to stop. Keep it short so you can easily remember and mentally repeat it when needed.

Try a Tabata or HIIT Workout

Torch calories with these high-intensity workouts! Why they work? You keep it short with shorter bursts of intense effort. You can handle 20 seconds of hard work – trust.

Plus, a Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise study found that if you work out in shorter intervals instead of longer stretches, it feels easier!

Learn more about it and try it out!*

Pyramid Training

Work your way from the top down so the hardest reps are behind you! You’ve already done the hardest part and are generally working in 45-, 30-, and 15-second intervals.

By starting at the max, the later reps feel at least a little easier since you’ve already pushed yourself past that point before!

Work with a Personal Trainer

We count this as the half tip, because duh. Clearly, one of the best ways to have a more intense workout is to have someone who can work with you!

As personal trainers, we will:

  • Watch your form
  • Push you when needed
  • Establish overall fitness goal
  • Create a plan for every time you exercise

Fitness shouldn’t be random-especially when you’re training for a triathlon, sport, or fight. You should always have a goal for your workout and our personal trainers will create a plan for how you’re going to achieve it!

Tabata vs. HIIT: What’s the Difference?

One of the questions we get asked all the time is about Tabata vs. HIIT, “What is the difference and which one is the better workout?” The simple answer is that both workouts are excellent for your body! In fact, Tabata is a form of HIIT. HIIT stands for high-intensity interval training, and people are loving it because it’s fast, effective, and fun. Tabata is a form of HIIT that involves 4-minute rounds during your session. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at both Tabata and HIIT workouts.

HIIT Workouts

Want to stay in shape, but you’re still rockin’ that excuse that you’re ’too busy’ to exercise? HIIT is great because it provides an excellent workout in a short period. HIIT workouts are known for their intensity!

At one of our South Tampa HIIT classes, you’ll experience short bursts of powerful movement, followed by regular short rest periods. The goal is to push yourself to your limit for a short period, rather than spending long increments of time doing cardio such as jogging or cycling. Known for its ability to burn fat, HIIT is making waves in the fitness world.

After a great workout, your trainer or massage therapist at Driven Fit+ SWS can help your recovery with a hand-held massager (perfect for those rests between exercises) or a therapeutic massage at our wellness studio.

Tabata Style Workouts

Tabata is a style of HIIT. It was developed in 1996 by Japanese professor, Dr. Izumi Tabata. It was originally created as a way to train Olympic speed skaters, but today it’s becoming an extremely popular form of exercise in gyms across the world.

Did you know? Tabata was developed to train Olympic athletes in 1996.

Tabata focuses on the same movement for four minutes where HIIT routines include a variety of exercises and time increments.

With Tabata, it goes like this:

  • Workout (HARD.) for 20 seconds.
  • Rest for 10 seconds.
  • Repeat these intervals 8 times

This gets you four minutes of high impact training. At just 10 seconds, Tabata’s rest period is shorter than most HIIT workouts. You will burn out those muscle groups and also be working on mental muscles too.

Let’s HIIT It

There are many variations of HIIT, Tabata being one of them. They have their differences, but both are excellent forms of exercise that offer weight loss and toning results. Both do a great job of getting your heart rate up, burning fat, and zapping calories.

Up for a challenge? Try one of our Full Body Blast group personal training classes at Driven Fit + Sponaugle Wellness Studio in South Tampa! Each class is different but always involves some form of HIIT training. We promise a high-intensity fun, and challenging full-body workout each and every time! Magnetic Resistance and Self Powered Exercise Machines

Electricity is so yesterday. At Driven Fit, our innovative equipment incorporates magnetic resistance. This means, our gym equipment is powered by exercisers. Here, you have to push yourself to feel the burn of an intense workout. Our mission is to guide our clients through a positive health and fitness journey.  We do this by encouraging hard work, by creating unique challenges for every single client. Magnetic resistance machines adapt to your level so your individual fitness goals are met. Let’s take a closer look…

Benefits of Magnetic Resistance

At Driven Fit, we use magnetic resistance and self powered exercise machines that use magnetism and electricity to provide users with a variable resistance. Science moment: Magnets attract or repel each other, depending on the charge of their poles.  Electricity comes into play by passing an electric current through the magnets.

Depending on the machine, users can push a button to increase the current magnetic flow, and increase the resistance.

Here are a few other benefits:

  • A wider range of resistance settings to make your workout more challenging over time
  • Intensity controlled generally with one simple dial
  • Whisper-quiet and smooth operation so all clients can fully enjoy their workout time

Self Powered Exercise Treadmills

This is one of our trainers’ favorite machines and every client runs or walks 1.5 miles (you can do it) on it during your initial consultation. The motor-less, curved treadmill and  Responsive Belt Technology reacts to every subtlety in your movement; your balance, posture, hip position, foot strike and more. You instantly feel when your body is not in the optimal position for running or walking.

Burn up to 44% more calories and push yourself to the limit. TrueForm will go as fast as you can with no maximum speed. Meaning, curved treadmills have no speed limit; this makes them perfect for more advanced athlete who are comfortable at a pace that may be faster than the top-speed of a standard motorized treadmill.

In addition to adjusting your pace to mimic road or track style intervals, the self-powered treadmill at our South Tampa fitness studio allows you to run with a natural strike on the balls of your feet. This small change in running style uses more muscle groups in the body as compared to the traditional heel strike of many runners. By hitting on the ball of your foot, it pushes your body forward creating the momentum to turn the curved treadmill belt.

Magnetic Resistance Bikes

In order for magnetic resistance bikes to work, a flywheel is key. Flywheels are wheels that resist changes in their rotational velocity (the speed at which they turn).  In a magnetic resistance bike, the flywheel is linked to the magnets and electric current controls the level of resistance. When a user peddles a variable resistance bike at its basic level, energy is supplied to overcome the resistance and turn the wheel.  The energy comes from the movement of the user’s muscles, and that is what helps burn calories.

Other Magnetic Resistance Exercise Equipment

Pretty much any workout equipment has a magnetic resistance version: ellipticals, cross trainers, and rowing machines. Our industry is putting more emphasis on your individuality and workout needs. And it shows by having a variety of options available for any type of workout you love.
