What Should I Look for in a Chiropractor in Tampa if I Work Out?

If you work out regularly, the best chiropractor in Tampa is one who understands athletic movement, strength training, and injury prevention. You should look for a chiropractor who focuses on mobility, alignment, performance, and recovery – not just short-term pain relief.

For active adults, lifters, runners, and athletes in Tampa, chiropractic care should help you move better, train harder, and recover faster. Here’s exactly what to look for when choosing the right chiropractor.

Does the Chiropractor Work With Active People and Athletes?

This is the most important factor.

A general chiropractor may focus on temporary pain relief. A chiropractor who works with active people understands:

  • Strength training mechanics
  • Running and repetitive stress
  • Joint mobility and stability
  • Sports-related movement patterns
  • Injury prevention, not just treatment

A sports-focused chiropractor in Tampa will assess how you move, not just where you hurt.

Do They Assess Mobility and Movement First?

A quality chiropractic provider will never adjust you without an evaluation.

What a proper assessment should include:

  • Posture and alignment review
  • Spinal and joint mobility testing
  • Range of motion checks
  • Movement screening
  • Training and activity history

If a chiropractor skips this step, they’re not tailoring care to your body or your workouts.

Do They Focus on Performance, Not Just Pain Relief?

Pain relief is important, but for people who work out, it’s only part of the goal.

A great chiropractor in Tampa for active adults helps with:

  • Improved squat, hinge, and pressing mechanics
  • Better hip, shoulder, and thoracic mobility
  • Reduced stress on joints
  • Faster recovery between workouts
  • Long-term injury prevention

Your chiropractor should be part of your performance and recovery plan.

Do They Integrate With Training and Recovery?

The best results come when chiropractic care is integrated with:

  • Strength training
  • Massage therapy
  • Mobility work
  • Stretch therapy
  • Recovery modalities

At Driven Fit, chiropractic care works alongside personal training, massage therapy, cold plunge, infrared sauna, and recovery services — giving athletes a complete system for staying healthy.

How Often Should You See a Chiropractor if You Work Out?

Frequency depends on how often and how hard you train.

Training 4-6 days per week:

Weekly or biweekly adjustments support mobility and performance.

Training 2-3 days per week:

Every 2-4 weeks helps maintain alignment and prevent stiffness.

Recovering from pain or injury:

More frequent care at first, then reduced as movement improves.

A good chiropractor explains the “why” behind your schedule.

Is Chiropractic Care Good for People Who Work Out?

Yes – chiropractic care is extremely beneficial for people who lift weights, run, or train consistently. It helps improve mobility, enhance performance, reduce pain, and prevent overuse injuries. Athletes in Tampa often use chiropractic adjustments to keep their bodies aligned so they can move better, lift stronger, and recover faster.

Below is a full guide to how chiropractic care supports training and why so many South Tampa athletes pair our Tampa chiropractic treatments with personal training and recovery work.

What Does Chiropractic Care Actually Help With for Active People?

If you work out regularly, your body is constantly dealing with:

  • Spinal compression
  • Muscle tightness
  • Joint restrictions
  • Alignment issues
  • Overuse patterns
  • Asymmetry from lifting or running

Chiropractic care relieves these issues by restoring proper movement through the spine and joints.

Top benefits for people who work out:

  • Improved mobility and range of motion
  • Better lifting mechanics
  • Reduced muscle and joint pain
  • Better alignment for squats, deadlifts, and pressing movements
  • Faster recovery after intense training
  • Improved posture
  • Lower risk of injury

How Does Chiropractic Care Improve Performance in the Gym?

1. Better Range of Motion

Adjustments open up restricted joints so you can move deeper and more efficiently in lifts like:

  • Squats
  • Deadlifts
  • Lunges
  • Overhead press
  • Bench press

When joints move well, muscles activate better, and lifts feel smoother.

2. Reduces Pain and Tightness

Chiropractic care reduces stress in common problem areas:

  • Lower back
  • Hips
  • Neck
  • Shoulders
  • Mid-back
  • Knees

Less pain = better workouts.

3. Improves Mind-Muscle Connection

When your spine and joints are aligned, your nervous system functions more efficiently, improving muscle activation and overall performance.

Do Runners Benefit from Chiropractic Care?

Absolutely – especially in South Tampa, where runners deal with repetitive-pounding stress year-round.

Chiropractic adjustments help:

  • Decrease hip and lower-back tension
  • Improve gait and stride mechanics
  • Reduce knee and IT band discomfort
  • Increase ankle and foot mobility

Many runners report quicker recovery and fewer flare-ups with regular chiropractic care.

How Often Should Active People See a Chiropractor?

Frequency varies based on training intensity:

Highly Active (4–6 training days/week)

Weekly or biweekly chiropractic adjustments support consistent performance.

Moderately Active (2–4 training days/week)

Every 2–4 weeks is usually ideal.

During injury recovery or peak training

Sessions may be weekly until symptoms stabilize.

Yes. Adjustments are tailored to your body and training level.

2. Can chiropractic care help prevent injuries?

No. You may feel pressure or release, but adjustments are gentle and controlled.

All About Cupping

Ever notice someone walking around with giant, red circles on their back and shoulders? This is not some weird form of blotchiness or a freaky skin condition. Those circles are a result of cupping – an ancient form of Chinese medicine believed to restore balance within the body, increase blood flow, and reduce pain.  Here we take a closer look at cupping…how it works, the benefits, and more!

The Science Behind Cupping

Like acupuncture, cupping is believed to balance yin and yang (the negative and positive) within the body and facilitate the flow of “qi” (the vital energy believed to regulate your spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical health). Restoring balance within the body helps with the body’s resistance to pathogens, increases blood flow, and reduces pain.

How Cupping Works

During a cupping treatment at Driven Fit + SWS, our resident practitioner Dr. Sponaugle heats a cup by placing a fire source such as herbs or alcohol into a cup and lighting it. As the fire starts to go down, she places the cup upside down directly onto the skin (most commonly on the back, neck, shoulders, or the specific site of pain). The air inside the cup cools and creates a vacuum that causes your skin to rise into the cup, and as a result, reddens the blood vessels. This is what leaves the reddish/purple circles on the treatment area.

If you’re uncomfortable with heated cupping, it’s no problem. Rubber stamps can also be used to create suction versus the traditional heating methods. If needed, Dr. Sponaugle will place ointment and bandages to the cupped areas on the skin to prevent infection. The “bruises” you experience will go away within 10 days after treatment.

Cupping Safety & Possible Side Effects

Cupping is generally very safe, however, it is not for everyone. Certain individuals should take extra precautions or avoid cupping altogether. This may include children, seniors, pregnant women, menstruating women, individuals who use blood-thinning medications, or individuals who have a sunburn, would, skin ulcer, or internal organ disorder.

Although rare, certain side effects may occur. This can include dizziness, nausea, pain or irritation at the cupping site, scarring, or infection caused by unsanitary conditions. At Driven Fit + SWS, Dr. Sponaugle is certified in cupping therapy. She goes beyond sanitation standards by thoroughly cleaning and sanitizing the equipment before and after each use and wears disposable gloves, goggles, and a mask.

Benefits of Cupping

Since ancient times, cupping has been known to offer a wide variety of benefits, some of which include:

  • Pain relief
  • Removal of toxins
  • Reduced inflammation
  • Improved physical, mental, and emotional health
  • Relaxation
  • Stress management
  • Headache relief
  • Weight loss
  • Improved digestion
  • Treatment of conditions such as shingles, facial paralysis, acne, lumbar disc herniation, and cervical spondylosis

Unexpected Things Chiropractic Care Can Help With

Every day millions of people who suffer from chronic back and neck pain seek chiropractic care for relief. However, what a lot of people don’t know is that chiropractic care is not just limited to alleviating these two ailments!

In fact, chiropractic treatment is one of the safest, most naturaland most effective forms of therapy used to treat a wide range of issues. Here are some unexpected things that chiropractic care can help with…

What Is Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractic care is a form of therapy that focuses on the body’s natural healing abilities. Treatment typically involves manual therapy such as spinal manipulation, however, exercise and nutritional counseling are often included in a chiropractic treatment plan.

At Driven Fit, our chiropractic teamled by Dr. Sponaugle, uses treatments such as stretchingsustained pressure, and specific joint manipulations that are delivered by hand and involve a quick and gentle thrust. Chiropractic care is often the first step in reducing chronic pain.

“There is a vast difference between treating the effects and adjusting the cause.” – Dr. D.D. Palmer

Unexpected Ailments Treated by Chiropractic Care

Immune System Support

What’s the best defense when it comes to preventing illness and overall wellness? A strong and healthy immune system!

For those who get sick often and typically turn to antibiotics, chiropractic care is an excellent way to give your immune system a boost – especially when paired with eating a gut-healthy and balanced diet as well as regular physical activity.

Chiropractic manipulation (and a properly aligned spineimproves the nervous system, thus helping every cell and organ in your body – including your immune system!

Improved Sleep & More Energy

There’s a lot going on right now – for everyone – and it’s not helping in terms of getting a good night’s sleep. In addition to stress, pain and discomfort also play a role in sleeping issues. Enter chiropractic care. Not only can this form of therapy regain healthy sleep patterns, it can also give you more energy.

Manual adjustments help with overall pain and discomfort throughout the body, but specifically help realign the nervous system, thus creating improved sleep quality. In addition, adjustments provide renewed energy by freeing nerves to work more efficiently

Increased Flexibility

Another unexpected benefit to chiropractic care is improved mobility and flexibility. Whether a sedentary lifestyle has started to wreak havoc or you’re suffering from an injuryyour muscles and ligaments can become inflexible and cause pain.

Manual adjustments can improve your range of mobility and help you get back to normal without having to live with pain and discomfort.

Stress: How Acupuncture Can Help

Dealing with an extra dose of stress these days? You’re not alone. Between balancing work, homeschooling the kids, and other commitments, your stress levels are likely through the roof! What you may not realize is how stress can lead to significant health issues such as high blood pressure, heart conditions, premature aging, and a slew of other conditions. It’s time to get help! At Driven Fit in South Tampa, we can help ease (and manage) your stress levels with effective, chiropractic care treatments such as acupunctureSee how

What is Acupuncture?

Ancient Chinese medicine believes the physical body to be regulated by an energy force called Qi.

Similar to the circulatory system, Qi moves throughout the body via pathways called meridians. If the body is in a state of good health, it has optimal energy flow, and if the body is in an unbalanced state, it creates energetic blockages.

Acupuncture promotes the body’s healthy energy flow of Qi and opens the blockages that may lead to physical and emotional disorders. It has been proven by numerous scientific studies to be one of the most viable and effective alternative methods for healing and overall well-being.

Acupuncture is a natural, drug-free treatment for stress!

How does Acupuncture Treat Stress

Stress is your body’s response to handling tough or demanding situations. Your nervous system springs into action and releases hormones that prepare you to either fight or take off i.e. the “fight or flight” response.

By strategically inserting needles half a millimeter away from a nerve, acupuncture eases stress by releasing endorphins that stimulate the part of the brain that control emotions (including stress and anxiety) and leads to a more balanced Qi

Acupuncture offers benefits in other areas that can also reduce stress, some of which include:

Manage Stress with Acupuncture

To manage chronic stress and anxiety, people often turn to anti-anxiety medication which can result in negative side effects, such as weight gain, insomnia, dizziness, and more. Acupuncture is an effective and natural method of treating stress which attacks the problem at its roots. Best of all, the symptoms lessen almost immediately!

At Driven Fit, we are proud to be partnered with Sponaugle Wellness Studio – one of Tampa’s premier chiropractic and natural healing specialists! We focus on creating a total healthy lifestyle at our studio gym.  If you are interested in learning more about acupuncture or would like to schedule a FREE consultation, please click here or call/text team Driven at (813) 440-3016.

Chiropractic for Carpal Tunnel

Chiropractic care is a noninvasive and nonsurgical alternative to healing, and the list of conditions from which it benefits continues to grow – Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) being one of them. Here Dr. Sarah Sponaugle takes a closer look at this condition and how chiropractic care is a great treatment option.

What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

You got the diagnosis, you know that Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common soft tissue repetitive stress injury (RSI) that causes numbness, tingling or weakness in your hand.

It occurs when there is pressure on your median nerve, which runs the length of your arm, through a passage in your wrist (the carpal tunnel) and ends in the hand. The median nerve controls the movement and feeling of all your fingers, except for the pinky.

Related > What’s That Sound: Chiropractic FAQs

What Causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

There are several causes for CTS, but the most common is due to performing repetitive motions from work (typing, assembly line employees, hairstylists, estheticians or electricians) or play (golfers, tennis players or cross-stitch needlework hobbyists). Other causes include injury or a decreased nerve supply from certain areas in the spine and neck.

What are the Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel?

There is a very specific set of symptoms caused by CTS, yet so often, it is often misdiagnosed. These symptoms typically include:

  • Burning, tingling, itching or numbness in your palm, thumb or index and middle finger
  • Trouble holding items or weakness in your hand
  • Shock-like feelings throughout your fingers
  • Tingling in the arm

How Chiropractic Care Can Help Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

At Driven Fit + SWS, the goal of our chiropractic care is to restore and maintain the body’s natural state of health. Here are different ways we relieve the pain caused by CTS.

Reduce Nerve Interference.

CTS is caused by issues located along the meridian nerve, and therefore, the less nerve interference, the less pain you will have. Chiropractic care works to reduce this nerve interference in the hand, arms and spine which allows proper blood – thus reducing pain and discomfort.

Correct Misalignments.

Because the median nerve is connected to the spine, correcting spinal misalignments will allow your body to function at its best, thus reducing the painful symptoms of CTS. Also, we adjust the wrist and hand to remove the nerve interference which allows the brain to send proper messages to your body, and therefore, work more efficiently.

Promote Overall Health.

Chiropractic care is well known to promote spinal health, and in turn, increases overall health. A healthy spine will decrease CTS pain as well as other conditions that can cause CTS symptoms such as arthritis, hypothyroidism, and diabetes.

Chiropractic Care for Depression and Anxiety

Sadly, mood disorders such as depression and anxiety are becoming more prevalent across the United States. In fact, 18% of Americans suffer from anxiety and depression, and that number seems to be on the rise. Those who suffer from mood disorders are no stranger to anxiety-related symptoms such as physical weakness, muscle tenseness, loss of concentration, inability to relax, and constant worry and fear

Medication has long been the go-to for anxiety relief, however, there are alternative practices that can also help – chiropractic care being one them.

Chiropractic Care for Hormone Balance

Not only does the central nervous system (composed of the brain and spinal cord) control all our body’s functions, it is also largely responsible for impacting the parts of the body that produce hormones.

Misalignments in the spine are common, which can interrupt nerve communication and function and disrupt hormone production. Because hormones influence many aspects of our lives including sleep patterns, weight gain, and mood, a hormone imbalance can lead to health concerns and cause anxiety, depression, or panic attacks.

Misalignments in the spine can also affect the limbic system, which is responsible for our feelings and emotional well-being. This can lead to negative feelings that exacerbate anxiety-related issues.

Chiropractic care will remove misalignments to allow for proper hormone balance and optimal limbic system function, thus increasing feelings of well-being and decreased anxiety.

Chiropractic Care for the Mind-Body Connection

Optimal well-being is when the mind and body are both healthy. When the body is not physically healthy, our emotional health also suffers. At the same time, mental weakness can also lead to physical illness.

Chiropractic care focuses on whole-body health and well-being so each system functions at optimal levels, and as a result, leads to reduced stress and anxiety. Learn more about how we can help you by chatting with Dr. Sarah and the chiropractic team at Driven Fit today!

Chiropractic Care as an Alternative to Medication

In addition to therapy, anxiety and mood disorders have traditionally been treated with medication. However, this may not be the best option. While anti-anxiety medications mask the symptoms of anxiety, the downside is that when medication is stopped, problems will reoccur, or people will develop a dependency to the drug. In addition, there are a ton of side effects such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, jitteriness, among others.

Driven Fit for Chiropractic Care

At Driven Fit, we believe in a whole-body approach to healing. Our resident South Tampa chiropractor, Dr. Sarah Sponaugle, is highly trained in her practice and uses chiropractic care as a safe and natural method to manage anxiety and depression.

Acupuncture

When dealing with muscle inflammation, acupuncture can be an amazing tool. Whether it’s from a chronic ache that has been prevalent for years or a new workout regimen, acupuncture can help to relieve pain and stress.

It can also reduce the pain from the wear and tear we put on our bodies as we age. Many types of pain or ailments can also be eased with acupuncture.

Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care promotes the proper functioning of the central nervous system through spinal alignment. If the spine becomes misaligned it interferes with the communication between the brain and the body.

Subluxation or misalignment can happen due to muscle strains, auto accidents, and falls. When the signals transmitted between the brain and the body are not working it can cause other bodily functions to break down leading to low energy, stress, digestive, and sleep issues.

If there’s a person you know who’s always complaining about aches and pains, then this is a perfect gift idea.

Chiropractic Care for Active Lifestyles

“Chiropractic care just makes you feel so much better. When I walk out of the clinic, I feel like I’m about three inches taller and everything’s in place. As long as I see the chiropractor, I feel like I’m one step ahead of the game.” – Tom Brady

Whether you think he’s the GOAT or not, he’s not wrong, chiropractic care is one of the best ways to improve performance and recovery. It is a healing therapy that is a safe, drug-free option to locate, correct and prevent joint dysfunctions. Chiropractic plays a vital role in keeping your body balanced, flexible, and functioning at its best – especially if you’re more active.

How does chiropractic care support an active lifestyle?

Whether you’re a professional athlete, sports enthusiast, or weekend warrior, you are susceptible to spinal injuries or displacement.

Your spinal column – made up of 24 independent vertebrae – is what enables your body to move, twist, and bend during activities. It also helps protect the central nervous system which controls every muscle, tissue, and organ of the body. Subluxations of the spine (a.k.a. joint dysfunctions) can have a negative effect on nerve communication from the brain to the body, often resulting in pain or discomfort.

Chiropractic care helps with relief.

At Driven + SWS, our licensed chiropractor works to identify the source of pain and eliminate joint restrictions or subluxations which can prevent proper nerve communication from the brain to the body.

While seeking relief from pain, we recommend multiple visits per week for several weeks or until the pain subsides. Dr. Sarah may also recommend home therapies such as icing and stretching to help between sessions.

Chiropractic care helps with recovery.

Even if the pain from an injury subsides, athletes should continue receiving chiropractic care as muscle or soft tissue damage may still be present. During the recovery period, we recommend one to two chiropractic visits per week in addition to doing strength exercises at home.

Chiropractic care helps with wellness.

Even when an athlete feels healthy, routine chiropractic care can help improve health and well-being and serve as an early detection system for new issues. We will recommend maintenance visits based on your specific needs along with a balanced diet and exercise program.

If it works for the pros….

An estimated 90% of all world-class athletes use chiropractic care to prevent injury and improve performance with the following:

  • Increased range of motion
  • Decreased muscle soreness from intense workouts
  • Reduced recovery time
  • Increased flexibility and performance
  • Enhanced immune functionality
  • Natural pain relief for the joints, back, neck, leg, knee, ankle, foot, shoulder, arm, elbow, and wrist and conditions such as arthritis, bursitis, fibromyalgia, and carpal tunnel syndrome

If you are an athlete at any level and are interested in chiropractic care for relief, recovery, or maintenance visits, please call or text our South Tampa wellness center today at 813-440-3016.
