Not everyone is self-motivated. In fact, a lot of us (yes, ourselves included) need a kick in the butt to consistently hit the gym. Yet, if you think about it, have you ever regretted a workout?? On the contrary, you loved it even though you hated it and were proud of yourself for putting in the work. Want to feel that way all the time? Here we offer a simple, yet highly effective technique that will forever change your willingness to exercise.
The Method
This method may seem a little corny, but we swear by its ability to motivate.
Step 1: Right before you start your workout, use the “Voice Memos” app on your phone to record a short statement describing how you feel physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Step 2: Immediately after you are finished exercising, repeat step one.
Step 3: Playback the recordings from both steps two and three.
Each time you use this method, take note of what you get out of it, i.e., the tone, energy, and enthusiasm in your voice. We promise that even the smallest detail will change your outlook for good. No longer will you work out because you should or because it’s a chore or obligation. Instead, you will perceive exercise as positive, fulfilling, and enjoyable.
*No smartphone, no problem. Just jot down the before and after statements on a sticky note or journal. You won’t hear the tone and energy in your voice, but it’s still an effective technique.
Why This Method is Effective
This method works because the noticeable shift in your mood becomes the motivator. Once you have listened to the recordings (or read the before and after messages on a note), you will have taught your brain to chase the many rewards of exercise and how it enhances your mood. You will stop perceiving exercise as a motivational challenge, but rather a mood-transforming opportunity.
Your Workout, Your Way
If you are begrudgingly taking the first steps on your fitness journey, do not worry about how hard you get after it. We have found that our clients were in a better mindset if they had a say in the level of intensity rather than us completely taking the reins. Keep in mind, it is our job to motivate you so that will happen too!
We understand that some people love high-intensity exercise while others prefer low to moderate exercise. With that in mind, we will never force a level of intensity that you are not comfortable with. This will only be counterproductive to your efforts and ours. To be successful, we will set attainable goals and increase the levels of intensity as needed to accomplish these goals.
