How We Treat the Pain: Trigger Point Therapy

October 28th, 2020

From time to time, you may get those mysterious, weird knots in your neck, shoulders, and/or back that seem to show up out of nowhere. These are called trigger points – tight areas within the muscle tissue that causes pain both locally and in other parts of the body. The level of pain can range from a dull, generalized ache to sharp, intense spasms. Either way, these trigger points are wreaking havoc on your body.

At Driven Fit + SWS, we use trigger point therapy to work out these stubborn, painful knots. Here’s how:

Goals of Trigger Point Therapy

Trigger point therapy is the treatment of myofascial trigger points that are commonly found in muscles and fascia and are one of the most common causes of chronic pain

Our own Dr. Sponaugle is a certified Trigger Point Therapist and can release these painful and tense points which assist in achieving long-term results.

Goals of Trigger Point Therapy include:

  • Improving blood circulation to the trigger zone
  • Stretching of the taut band (muscle fiber bundle)
  • Releasing of the surrounding fasciae

Trigger Points and Pain

As mentioned above, trigger points are a major cause of chronic musculoskeletal pain. What many people do not realize is that the pain isn’t always local. In fact, trigger points often refer pain to adjacent or remote areas of the body. This means that the origin of the pain and the area where it manifests can be totally different!

For example, low back pain may be related to trigger points in the abdominal muscles, while trigger points in the neck can lead to headaches. This referred pain is a very common characteristic of trigger points and can be easily worked out through Trigger Point Therapy at Driven Fit + SWS.

Trigger Point Therapy Methods

Dr. Sarah Sponaugle will work with you to locate the source of the discomfort and will apply one of several methods to treat trigger points, including Manual Trigger Point Therapy, Dry Needling, and a combination of the two techniques – all of which have proven to be highly effective in reducing pain. Don’t worry; we’ll personalize a plan just for you!

  • Mystery Trigger Point Therapy – involves specific manipulations to the muscles, fascia, and connective tissues
  • Dry Needling – the use of acupuncture needles intended to improve circulation and blood flow to the affected muscle trigger point areas

You may experience a significant decrease in pain after even just one session of trigger point therapy! But of course, the more we work the affected trigger point, the better the results.
